I took a staycation and it was exactly what I needed

I took a staycation and it welches exactly what I neededI took a staycation and it welches exactly what I neededI was late in life to catch the travel bug. As a terrible flier, leid going somewhere that involved me boarding a tin can in the sky was quite easy a decision to make. But then travel pretty much became a way of life for my generation and you werent anybody unless you were taking a big trip at least once a year as well as frequently escaping somewhere wonderful for a quick weekend. Millennials may not be buying houses, but most of them are well-established jet-setters.After all the United Nations estimates that 20% of all international travelers are millennials (approximately 200 million people) and 75%of young professionals in the U.S. see business travel as a major work perk and 65% consider it to be a status symbol, according to a recent survey commissioned byHilton Hotels Resorts. And lets face it, traveling is awesome. Experiencing new and exotic places, people and th ings is incredible and if you are lucky enough to do it, you should do it. However, at the same time, traveling is still a pain. It is annoying, inconvenient, exhausting and sometimes dangerous. That is why I opted for a staycation one weekend this summer. I could have actually gone to a fun wedding in New Orleans that weekend but it would have been a quick, turn around trip and just the thought of it was too much. So, I decided to stay at a hotel, about 10 blocks from my house (though many people just stay in their own homes for staycations) and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I had been feeling particularly stressed and this was the weekend of relaxation I needed. Here are some of the major benefits of a staycation1. Its cheaperUnless you go on a shopping spree or stay at the worlds most expensive hotel, a staycation is definitely cheaper. Even if you order meals out, you will inevitably save money by not taking a car, train or plane. According to theSimplemost/Dont Wa ste Your Money 2017 Travel Surveymore than half (52%) of respondents cited money as a travel stressor.2. Its easier to get thereNo waiting in lines, no airport security (and feeling violated after), no screaming children (unless they are your own) and no jet lag that will mess up your body and your clock. Being able to walk to my destination with only one small overnight bag was utterly delightful compared to the hell I put myself through when I overpack.3. Less planning is involvedTraveling is great but lets face it, the planning of a big trip becomes a second job that you dont get paid for. With a staycation, you can totally plan it out but if you dont have an itinerary, you will probably come up with something else to do. Winging things is not as easy when you travel especially if your party is bigger than just you. You also dont have to worry about meals as much because you know where to get what you like and not every meal needs to be a three-hour production. According to the S implemost survey,19% of respondents say logistics is a major stressor.4. You know people on your staycationIts great to pull a Reese Witherspoon in Wildand find yourself by doing the whole solo travel thing, but sometimes you just want to be surrounded by people you know. You can travel with friends but that can be tricky to coordinate with everyones crazy schedules but it is easy to grab a drink with a friend if you both live in the same place.5. You make discoveries about your hometown or cityWhen you do a staycation you may discover some hidden gems in your own neighborhood. For my staycation, I stayed at the Arlo Sohoand discovered all the perks this charming hotel has to offer. In addition to its super fun rooftop, I also discovered this hotel is a great place to just hang out during the day (super sweet staff, chill and inviting lounges, free Wifi, beautiful people walking around, Monday movie night and you can bring your dog) in case I ever need a daycation. It has also has a glamping section set up right in its courtyard so technically I went camping on my staycation without even leaving the city.6. You can actually disconnectOf course, you can disconnect when you travel but you have to make a real effort and you often need your phone and a Wifi connection to navigate and communicate but on a staycation, you may truly be able to unplug, even if it is just for a bit. Travel is great but I find I dont truly relax on trips but if I am in a familiar environment where I know I can let my guard down, there are a whole lot more possibilities.Consider a staycation if you are getting stressed out about planning a trip.

Cleaning Up Industrial Water

Cleaning Up Industrial Water Cleaning Up Industrial Water Waterclean wateris one of lifes essentials. People need it to live and industry needs it to churn out products ranging from computer chips to electricity. As access to stable supplies of clean, fresh water shrinks, municipalities and industry are looking to other sources and the technologies to cleanse them of salts, minerals, and pollutants. Putting together a successful project requires a host of project participants to maneuver through a range of regulatory, technological, and communication barriers, hopefully following a series of best practices.Identifying and defining those practices, as well as obstacles, is the goal of industry professionals convened by ASME to tackle the development and implementation of industrial demineralization, or desalination, technologies. The group, which met January 28-29 in Washington, D.C., is working along the parameters of an earlier group tasked with investigating best practices and futu re directions of municipal wastewater reuse by electric utilities. There are similarities electric generating stations as well as process plants or other industrial facilities require a water supply treated to specific quality. It is critical that water professionals from the owner define the water chemistry required and communicate that to prospective vendors and engineering-construction firms. The concept seems simple enough but group members agreed it does not always occur. What happened to the process engineer? asked Doug Hubbard, manager of generation chemistry standard and controls for American Electric Power, the giant Columbus, OH-based electric utility. Who takes ownership?Forward osmosis desalination plant, located at Al Khaluf in Oman. Image Starsend/Wikimedia CommonsPick and ChooseDesalination, with a long history of producing drinking water from seawater, is not new. But it is energy intensive and expensive. The Middle East is studded with plants, the largest to produce 2 28 mio gallons per day, using multi-stage flashing and reverse-osmosis technology. Membrane technology is newer than distallation, with reverse/osmosis being the most widely used system for desalination in the U.S. It uses pressure as a force to drive saline water through semipermeable membranes, producing a stream of brine and another of clean product water. It primarily removes sodium and chloride nanofiltration is also a membrane process that removes calcium, magnesium, and sulphates. In the U.S., the most high-profile demineralization project belongs to Carlsbad, CA. The southern California city and San Diego County are being squeezed by higher prices and reduced volume for drinking water brought in from northern California and the Colorado River. The privately owned 50,000-gallon-per-day plant will desalinate seawater for drinking water, meeting about 7% of the regions needs, according to city water officials. But industrial users across the country depend on clean water just as much, and often need their water treated to above federal drinking water standards.Participants also warned of expected zero-liquid-discharge requirements coming in the not-too-distant future. Technically, that can mean building a pond within the industrial plants boundaries but more often it is evaporators, crystalizers, or electrodialysis. All are costly and generally driven by regulatory obligations, often in regions where water is scarce, making reuse cost-effective.At the SourceIdentifying the properties of the source water and defining the quality of the product water are perhaps the first two keys to producing a successful project, agreed workshop members. Ideally, there should be three to five years of data on source water quality to ensure a proper treatment system. Designing and building a system with limited data courts trouble A system designed to handle one type of water could fail, or produce a product that compromises the industrial plants equipment.Details are often overlooked because the cost of a water treatment plant is minor compared to overall project costs, said workshop members, who noted that off-the-shelf systems are often recommended by vendors when an engineered system is the better answer. The workshop produced groupings describing characteristics of successful projects and barriers to success. Participants agreed that successful projects have the following characteristics Defensible design fundament for inlet water quality and sufficient quality and quantity of inlet and discharge water data, with adequate history. Frequent and meaningful communication among all project participants, including the owner, solution provider, and architecture/engineering firm, potentially written into the contract. The solution provider has proven, successful prior experience. The owner has prioritized cost, performance, reliability, and operability, a thorough cost estimate based on full economic analysis. Performance specifications fo r each piece of equipment are provided.Barriers to success were found to include Unclear project objectives or mid-steam changes in scope. No regulatory drivers to create a sense of urgency. The owners abdication of project management responsibility. Lack of real world experience by design professionals. Anti-innovation bias. Water projects not viewed as a revenue enhancer by owners financial staff, a view that often results in an inadequate final system. The group will review the findings with the goal of producing a report to enhance best practices and future initiatives within the industry. What I need is a document that becomes the industry best practice or standard for desalination system and equipment design, said Hubbard. Something that forces everybodys hand to do this right. What I need is a document that becomes the industry best practice or standard for desalination system and equipment design. Something that forces everybodys hand to do this right.Doug Hub bard, American Electric Power

How to Reach the World Series in Five Years

How to Reach the World Series in Five YearsHow to Reach the World Series in Five YearsFor longer than any of you currently reading this have been alive, this years World Series teams have been losers - sometimes lovable, legendarily cursed, often achingly close, but nonetheless, losers at the art of winning baseballs top honor. This year the Cubs, who last won the World Series in 1908, and the Indians, whose last victory was 1948, reached the peak of their sport. What can you learn from their successes to reach the peak of yours? This terrific recap from Jarrett Seidler at Baseball Prospectus walks through Theo Epsteins step-by-step transformation of the Cubsfrom consecutive last-place cellar dwellers to todays dominant franchise. In just five years, he and his new team reached the World Series. On the other side, the Cleveland Indians were largely pegged to be a mediocrity again this year - ESPN rated them 17th in their season preview. That these two teams are now the greatest in the game is part of the magic of sports. Its renewal, its redemption, its failing to remember the setbacks of last year as you pursue the glory of this one.Perhaps that inspires us fruchtwein about sports. Its the constant reminder, amidst a tumult of statistics and trivia and rumor and egos, that we can overcome and we can emerge victorious, despite the odds. And that reminds you that you, too, can overcome.Whether you are charting your rocketship to the stars, or contemplating setbacks of your own, this years baseball drama is a reminder that five years can change everything. And the best way to change five years from now is to change this year. And the best way to change this year is to change today. For sports team, picking the goal is easy - win the championship, raise your arms in victory, lift the trophy high. For you, picking the goal is part of the freedom, and part of the curse, of having choice in your career. What is your goal, your choice, your desire? Is it getting to the next promotion? Or the promotion after that?Is it getting into a more lucrative, more rewarding, or more fulfilling role in life?Is it changing industries, changing fields, or changing cities?Or is it just change, whatever form it may take? Change that takes you away from the drudgery of today and gets you to a new place in your career?Whatever your goals, whatever your dreams, the best way to become the champion you want to be is to follow the same simple steps that transformed the Cubs and Indians1. Set your goalWhats a thrilling place youd like to be in five years? While the randomness of life means you probably cant pick the title, the company, the place and the day - too much is out of your control - you can set simple goals. Be a VP, Marketing or Manage a large team of software engineers or Progress my sales career to where Im carrying a $10 mm book of geschftlicher umgang all make sense as simple, easy-to-understand goals to aspire to.2. Make the planKeeping it simple, what are the steps to getting there? The Cubs didnt do it all in one year and neither can you. Break down your goals into something you can actually achieve each year - getting the promotion, or improving your results, or out-performing your boss expectations.3. Go to practiceIts remarkably simple to be successful, but hard to do. As Silicon Valley star Keith Raboistweeted Saturday I have never met a single successful person who didnt get there by outworking other (exempting VCs).4. Play like a champion todayMixing sports inspiration, this Notre Dame football slogan captures the essence of being a winner. Every day, every meeting, every client call, every code review, every focus group, every industry conference, every slideshow, every day, you need to decide how much you want to be a champion. If the answer comes back very, very badly, then your results will predictably follow. So with the Cubs and the Indians in the World Series, Readers, its a sure thing that they cantboth lose. But we can also say that theyve both won already. And for you too, the choice is yours. Ill look forward to seeing you hold your championship trophy high.Im rooting for you

4 ways the most organized leaders stay on track

4 ways the most organized leaders stay on track4 ways the most organized leaders stay on trackYou may envy those you see that seem to have it all together organized, polished and ready for any situation, at any time. You might wonder how things will ever seem that simple and streamlined. If you want to be prepared for what lies ahead, read on to learn the tips and tricks that organized leaders used to stay on track.PrioritizeFirst, recognize that the truly organized are rarely trying to do it all. Prioritizing is key when it comes to getting work done. Not only does it help by forcing you to stop and think about the tasks at hand, but also what is truly critical or time-sensitive. For true success in prioritizing, be sure to ask your direct supervisor elend only will it help in making sure youve got the importance of each item straight, it will also signal to leadership that youre on task and ready to get the job done.Action stepSome tasks just arent important enough to get done at all, especially at crunch time. Work with your leadership to identify those tasks that just arent valuable and can be scrapped or deprioritized. Be sure everyone agrees before something gets set aside its not an area where you want confusion or misaligned expectations.PlanNext, decide how youre going to get it done. Assess how long you think tasks are going to take, which ones are going to need input from others, and when you can reasonably deliver a finished product. If, given all the realities of your workplace, the plan doesnt meet the timeline, start determining how you can make it work. Could the scope be decreased, or minimized initially? What tasks could be done after hours? What can you do in your most productive time window? Which ones could be started and then set aside while youre waiting for someone to get back to you? Is there someone else who could do some of the steps required? Begin with a rough outline and then involve your leadership to collaborate on how to meet d eadlines and expectations.Action stepHaving a plan signals to others that you have thought of everything, even if the timelines are tight and the workload high. If, after you outline a strategy, it proves impossible to get it all done, having a plan helps you definitively demonstrate the issues and acts as a starting point for a discussion on how to pivot and adjust.Get helpAnother tactic of the successfully organized is to ask others for help. Initially, it may seem counter to the image of having it all together to ask for assistance, but its critical to a job well done. Ask for help in prioritizing, in planning and in doing the work. The key is in how you ask for help presenting your situation with research, ideas and a proposed plan in hand is a lot different than dumping a tangled mess on someone else. Get help with the fine tuning, not all the heavy lifting and always show up with ideas instead of just problems.Action stepLet go of some of those easier tasks. If you were alway s the go-to person for a specific job, for example, it can be hard to pass that on to someone else. If youve mastered the task, however, and turned it into scripted, predictable work, take a deep breath and move on to a more critical task that need your consideration. Someone newer on your team may actually be eager for the opportunity to help.CommunicateFinally, whatever else you do, one of the best ways to appear organized is to proactively communicate. How are you progressing? What milestones have you met? What tasks are lagging behind? Are you going to meet a deadline? Clearly and respectfully answer these questions to leadership before they are ever asked. Let them know whats going on, when youre running ahead or behind schedule, and when you need input. Even if you dont have the nachrichtensendung theyre hoping for, proactively and consistently communicating is your best bet - it makes you look organized and on the ball, no matter what the circumstances.Action stepFollow a co nsistent communication schedule, such as giving an update email at end of day or week on high-priority items, projects or multi-person tasks. Put a reminder in your calendar or phone for yourself and give a quick synopsis people will come to know when to expect an update and will respect your consistent and organized communication.Being organized doesnt guarantee you can do it all, but it can help you set clear expectations about what is possible. Use these tips to get into some consistent habits and many of the other behaviors of the successfully organized will fall into place. Think about how you want to keep better track of your tasks, and how you want to keep those around you informed. Its not always about doing more, but it certainly is about doing what you do well, and making sure key people know about it, which will help you get ahead in any organization.Joel Garfinkleis anexecutive leadership coachwho recently worked with a senior manager who had trouble getting and staying organized.
